In 2023, global exports of bananas reached a total value of $14.4 billion.
This figure marks a 4.1% increase from the five-year period starting in 2019, when the total value of banana shipments stood at $13.9 billion.
From 2022 to 2023, the value of banana exports worldwide grew by 6.7%, rising from $13.5 billion.
The top five exporters of bananas—Ecuador, the Philippines, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and the Netherlands—accounted for nearly 60% (57.4%) of the global banana trade.
From a continental perspective, Latin America (excluding Mexico) and the Caribbean emerged as the largest banana exporters in 2023, contributing $8 billion worth of banana shipments, representing 55.5% of global exports. European exporters followed with 19.4%, while Asia contributed 15.7%.
Smaller shares came from North American exporters (5.3%), African exporters (4.1%), and Oceania, which accounted for a minimal 0.003%, led by Australia and Pitcairn.
For classification purposes, fresh or dried bananas and plantains are designated under the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix 0803.

The following are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value of bananas in 2023:
1.Ecuador: $3.8 billion (26.3% of global banana exports)
2.Philippines: $1.22 billion (8.5%)
3.Costa Rica: $1.19 billion (8.2%)
4.Guatemala: $1.15 billion (8%)
5.Netherlands: $926.3 million (6.4%)
6.Colombia: $915.2 million (6.3%)
7.Belgium: $753.8 million (5.2%)
8.United States: $527.1 million (3.7%)
9.Germany: $314.2 million (2.2%)
10.Vietnam: $312 million (2.2%)
11.Honduras: $303.2 million (2.1%)
12.India: $251.4 million (1.7%)
13.Cameroon: $249.4 million (1.7%)
14.Mexico: $240.5 million (1.7%)
15.France: $205.7 million (1.4%)
Together, these 15 countries accounted for 85.6% of total global banana exports in 2023.
Among the leading exporters, the countries with the most significant growth in banana exports were India (up 54.4% compared to 2022), Germany (up 24.8%), Netherlands (up 16.9%), Costa Rica (up 16.8%), France (up 14%), and the Philippines (up 11.2%).
On the other hand, Colombia experienced the largest decline, with exports dropping by 14.7% from 2022, followed by Cameroon (-9.5%) and Mexico (-9%).
