In 2024, total international copper ore exports reached an estimated US$102.4 billion.
This figure marks a substantial 76.1% increase from the $58.1 billion recorded in 2020.
On a year-over-year basis, global copper exports rose 8.9% from the $94 billion total in 2023.
The five top exporters—Chile, Peru, Indonesia, Brazil, and Australia—together accounted for approximately 65.4% of the total export value in 2024.
Copper is known for its softness, ductility, and excellent electrical conductivity, making it ideal for electrical wiring—except in overhead power lines, where aluminum is typically favored due to weight and cost considerations.
While nearly 50% of mined copper is allocated to electrical wiring and cabling, it also plays a critical role in electric motors, and is widely used in construction for its resistance to corrosion, commonly found in roofs, gutters, spires, and doors.
When analyzed by region, Latin America (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean) was responsible for 55% of total copper ore exports. Asia contributed 19.6%, while North America accounted for 10.2%.
Other contributors included Oceania—mainly Australia and Papua New Guinea—at 5.3%, Europe at 5.2%, and Africa at 4.8%.
For reference, the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) code for copper ores and concentrates is 2603.
