These countries collectively accounted for 69.3% of total global coal imports, confirming Asia’s dominance in coal demand.


Regional Breakdown

Asia was the largest coal-importing continent, responsible for $182.4 billion in purchases, which represented 83.1% of the global total.

·Europe followed, importing 11.6% of the world’s coal.

·Smaller import shares were attributed to:

·Latin America (2.9%, including the Caribbean but excluding Mexico)

- Africa (1.5%)

- North America (0.8%)

- Oceania (0.1%), with Australia and New Caledonia as key contributors.


Coal Types and Classification

Coal and similar solid fuels fall under the Harmonized Tariff System code 2701. About 66.4% of the coal imported globally in 2023 was bituminous coal, while coal briquettes and related fuels made up a negligible 0.06% of the total.

Combined, these 15 nations were responsible for 88.4% of total global coal import spending in 2023.


Market Trends: Growth and Decline in Coal Imports

Among the major importers, mainland China was the only country to post a year-on-year increase in coal imports, with a 36.6% rise from 2022.

In contrast, several nations saw sharp declines:

·Germany: -45.8%

·Poland: -36.7%

·Philippines: -32.5%

These drops may reflect energy diversification efforts or changes in domestic energy policy.
