Global electricity exports reached approximately US$69 billion in 2025, reflecting continued growth in cross-border power trade driven by regional grid integration and rising demand for low-carbon energy transfers.
Over the past five years, the total value of internationally traded electricity increased by 9.6%, rising from US$62.9 billion in 2021. On a year-over-year basis, global electricity exports also expanded by 9.5%, up from US$63 billion in 2024.
Electricity remains one of the most strategically important energy commodities, as it enables countries to balance supply and demand across interconnected grids, particularly in regions with strong cross-border transmission infrastructure.
The global electricity export market is highly concentrated among a small group of suppliers. The top five exporters—France, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Laos—accounted for approximately 33.8% of global electricity export value in 2025, highlighting the importance of integrated regional power systems.
From a regional perspective, Europe dominated global electricity exports, generating approximately US$53.5 billion, or 77.6% of the worldwide total. This reflects the continent’s highly interconnected power grid and active cross-border electricity trading.
Asia ranked second with 9.8%, followed by North America (4.9%). Latin America contributed 4.6% (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean), while Africa accounted for around 3% of global electricity exports.
For trade classification purposes, electrical energy is categorized under HS Code 2716, within the broader Chapter 27 group covering mineral fuels and related energy products.

France remained the world's leading electricity exporter in 2025, generating approximately US$7.2 billion, or 10.4% of global exports.
Germany followed with US$6.2 billion (9.1%), while Switzerland ranked third with US$4.6 billion (6.7%).
Other major electricity-exporting countries included:
1. Czech Republic (3.8%, $2.6 Billion)
2. Laos (3.8%, $2.6 Billion)
3. Hungary (3.7%, $2.57 Billion)
4. Norway (3.7%, $2.56 Billion)
5. Spain (3.6%, $2.45 Billion)

7. Austria (3.4%, $2.34 Billion)
8. Slovakia (3.3%, $2.28 Billion)
9. Canada (3.3%, $2.3 Billion)
10. Sweden (2.9%, $2 Billion)
11. Slovenia (2.7%, $1.9 Billion)
12. Denmark (2.6%, $1.8 Billion)
Collectively, these 15 countries accounted for approximately 66.5% of global electricity exports, reflecting the regionalized and infrastructure-driven nature of electricity trade.
Fastest-Growing and Declining Electricity Exporters
Between 2024 and 2025, several countries experienced strong growth in electricity exports.
Norway led growth with an increase of 35.8%, followed by Hungary at 33.2%. The Czech Republic recorded a 25.6% rise, while Germany also expanded significantly with 25% growth, driven by stronger cross-border trading activity.
In contrast, a small number of countries experienced declines. Austria recorded a sharp drop of -24.1%, while Slovakia fell by -10.2%, reflecting fluctuations in regional supply-demand balances and transmission conditions.
