Global trade in peanuts, also known as groundnuts, reached a total export value of approximately US$3.75 billion in 2025. This represents a decline of about 9.9% compared to 2021, when worldwide peanut exports were valued at $4.16 billion. On a year-over-year basis, export revenues fell further by 13.7% from $4.34 billion recorded in 2024.
Peanuts are edible seeds from a leguminous plant, notable for the unusual characteristic that their pods develop underground rather than above the surface. They are widely consumed in various forms, including roasted, boiled, baked, or raw snacks. In addition, peanuts are processed into products such as peanut oil, peanut butter, and peanut flour.
Beyond food uses, peanuts also have several industrial applications. These include their use in producing paint, varnish, lubricants, leather treatments, furniture polish, insecticides, soap, and cosmetics. Peanut shells are utilized in manufacturing materials like plastics, wallboard, abrasives, rayon-based paper products, adhesives, and even fuel.
In terms of global trade, the top five peanut-exporting countries in 2025 were India, the United States, Brazil, mainland China, and the Netherlands. Together, these nations contributed approximately 58.1% of total global peanut export value.
From a regional perspective, Latin America (excluding Mexico but including Caribbean nations) led global peanut exports, generating $1.46 billion and accounting for 39.1% of the total. Asia ranked second with a 30.2% share, followed by North America (13.1%), Europe (9.9%), Africa (18.7%), and Oceania (0.02%), including exporters such as Australia, Fiji, and New Zealand.
Looking at imports, the largest peanut-importing countries in 2025 were the Netherlands, Indonesia, Mexico, mainland China, and Germany. Collectively, these five countries were responsible for 40.9% of total global peanut imports by value.
The comparison between exporters and importers highlights a difference in market concentration. While the top five exporters accounted for 58.1% of global exports among 111 exporting countries, the top five importers made up a smaller share—40.9%—across a broader group of 167 importing countries and territories.
Regionally, Europe dominated global peanut imports, accounting for 47.2% of total import value. Asia followed with 31.4%, while North America contributed 11.1%. Smaller shares were recorded for Africa (5.8%), Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean (3.3%), and Oceania (1.2%), led by Australia and New Zealand.
Additional data shows that the average import price for peanuts in-shell was $1,209 per ton in 2025, reflecting a 12.3% increase compared to $1,077 per ton in 2024. Shelled peanuts, which require more processing, commanded a higher average price of $1,317 per ton in 2025, slightly down by 3% from $1,279 per ton the previous year.
The higher price for shelled peanuts can largely be attributed to additional labor and processing costs. For classification purposes, peanuts fall under Harmonized System codes 120251 (in-shell) and 120252 (shelled), and they are categorized as oil seeds, often referred to as groundnuts.
In terms of product type, shelled peanuts dominated global exports, accounting for 91% of total sales in 2025. The remaining 9% consisted of peanuts exported in-shell, a proportion similar to the 9.4% recorded in 2024.
