Export of Russian Wood Products

The Russian wood industry is export-oriented. The main export products are plywood and softwood lumber. The share of pulp and paper-based manufactured boards exported is as high as 30% (the share of pulp exports is about 32%). In fact, these products (except timber) are exported mainly to the markets of the post-Soviet countries, primarily Central Asia (former Soviet Union).

According to customs data, export of russian wood products are declining. Thus, in 2023, Russia exported $9.9 billion worth of wood and wood products and pulp and paper products, a 29.7% decrease from 2022 ($14 billion).

At the end of 2023, sawn timber and log exports totaled 25 million cubic meters, compared to 27 million cubic meters in the same period of the previous year (down 7%). Exports of deep-processed products were around 21-22 million cubic meters.

Despite the negative forecasts following the downturn in the European market, the majority of companies in the timber industry managed to quickly shift their sales markets from Europe to Asia. Today, for the first time, the share of Asian countries in Russian timber exports reached 98%, while in 2021 it did not exceed 76%.

China remains the main partner, with about 13 million cubic meters of timber to be exported to the country in 2023, the same as in 2022. The next partner is Uzbekistan, consuming more than 2 million cubic meters of Russian timber (up 8%), and Kazakhstan is in the top three - 926,000 cubic meters, up 17% from 2022.

The top 10 importers include only Asian countries, namely Azerbaijan - 516 thousand cubic meters, Tajikistan - 482 thousand cubic meters, Kyrgyzstan - 417,000 cubic meters, Iran - 392,000 cubic meters, South Korea - 340,000 cubic meters, Japan - 337,000 cubic meters cubic meters, and Hong Kong - 283 million cubic meters.

Most of the supplies came from the Irkutsk region, the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Arkhangelsk region. in 2023, Siberia supplied almost half of the timber exported (9.2 million m3, or 44.7%). The Northwest Territories account for a quarter of the supply - 5.3 million m3 . Far Eastern mills exported 2.8 million m3 (13.5%), Urals mills 1.5 million m3 (7.2%), Volga mills 1.2 million m3 (5.9%), and the Central Federal District's share was 1.7%.
