In April 2024, the EU car market grew by 13.7%, with new registrations totaling 913,995 units, thanks to strong growth in all the main markets: Spain (+23.1%), Germany (+19.8%), France (+10.9%) and Italy (+7.7%).

This growth is partly due to the fact that there are two more sales days this year compared to the same period last year, when the Easter holiday fell in April.

In the first four months of the year, new car registrations in the EU rose by 6.6% to almost 3.7 million units. Several of the region's largest markets saw solid growth over the period, with Germany and Spain both posting 7.8% growth, followed by France (+7%) and Italy (+6.1%).

In April last year, electric vehicles accounted for nearly 12% of the EU car market, while hybrids rose from 24.9% to 29.1%. The combined market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles fell from 52.8% to 48.9%, less than half the market share.

This boosted the market share of hybrid-electric vehicles from 24.9% in April 2023 to 29.1%.

Plug-in hybrid registrations rose slightly by 3.7% last month. Belgium fell sharply by 17.6%, France remained stable (-0.1%), while Germany's strong performance, up 28.4%, helped to balance the segment.Plug-in hybrids accounted for 6.8% of the overall automotive market in April, with 62,148 vehicles sold.

Gasoline and Diesel Vehicles

In April 2024, sales of gasoline vehicles increased by 7.3% to 328,967 units, with double-digit growth in the main markets including Spain (+24.1%), Germany (+18.6%) and Italy (+14.1%). However, their market share fell from 38.1% to 36% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the market for diesel vehicles remained stable at around 118,000 units, accounting for almost 13% of the market. Although the major markets of Italy (-21.1%), Spain (-19.3%) and France (-18.1%) declined sharply, significant growth in Germany (+28.2%) helped to offset these losses.
