As of 2024, global sales of exported salt reached approximately US$3.78 billion.

This marks a 37% increase in export value compared to 2020, when worldwide salt exports were valued at $2.76 billion. On a year-over-year basis, salt exports rose by 10.5%, climbing from $3.42 billion in 2023.

Salt, primarily composed of sodium chloride, has diverse applications beyond culinary use. While only around 6% of produced salt goes into food products, it plays a crucial role in water treatment, de-icing roads and pavements, and agricultural operations. Industrial uses include the production of soap, aluminum, paper pulp, synthetic rubber, and ceramic glazes.

Global Salt Export and Import Trends

The five top exporters by export value in 2024 were India, Germany, the Netherlands, Mexico, and the United States. Combined, these countries accounted for 43.7% of all global salt exports.

By continent, Europe was the largest contributor, responsible for $1.6 billion or 42.2% of global salt exports. Asia followed with 24.2%, then North America at 16.1%. Other regions contributed as follows: Africa (10.9%), Latin America (6.2%)—excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean—and Oceania (0.4%), mainly from New Zealand.

The five largest importers of salt in 2024 were mainland China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Belgium. These countries together accounted for 39.4% of total salt imports measured by value.

Interestingly, this data reveals a more concentrated exporter base (top five supplying 43.7%) compared to a wider pool of over 220 importing nations and territories, where the top five buyers represent a slightly smaller share (39.4%).

By continental region, Europe dominated salt imports with 39.7% of global demand, followed by Asia (35.9%), North America (15.7%), Africa (4.2%), Latin America (3.6%)—again excluding Mexico—and Oceania (1%), primarily led by Australia and New Zealand.

For classification purposes, salt products fall under the 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System code 250100, which includes table salt, denatured salt, and pure sodium chloride.
