24-04-2025
In 2023, worldwide gravel exports reached a total value of US$2.67 billion, marking a 22.6% decrease compared to the $3.45 billion recorded in 2019.
On a year-over-year basis, gravel shipments dropped by 14.1% from the $3.11 billion reported in 2022.
Gravel—composed of small rock fragments—is a critical material for road construction, especially in low-traffic rural regions. It's categorized based on particle size. Gravel is also blended with sand and other materials to produce asphalt and construction products like concrete blocks, bricks, and drainage pipes. Other practical uses include roofing, winter road safety (traction), water filtration systems, and glass manufacturing when combined with industrial sand.
The top 5 gravel-exporting countries in 2023 were Norway, China, Germany, France, and Belgium, together accounting for around 40.5% of total gravel exports worldwide.
Regionally, Europe dominated global gravel trade, contributing $1.68 billion or roughly 63% of the total value. Asian exporters followed with a 23.9% share, while North America contributed 8.5%.
Other regions made up smaller portions: Latin America (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean) contributed 4%, followed by Africa (0.4%) and Oceania (0.2%), with New Zealand as a notable player in the latter.
The Harmonized System (HS) code used for tracking gravel trade is 2517, which includes pebbles, gravel, and crushed stone.
