Global purchases of imported milk reached a total value of US $34.1 billion in 2024.
Compared with 2020, when milk imports were worth $31.6 billion, the global market grew by 7.8% over the five-year period. However, on a year-over-year basis, international milk imports slipped 5.6% from $36.1 billion recorded in 2023.
The five largest milk-importing nations—Mainland China, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Algeria—accounted for roughly 33.7% of all global milk import spending in 2024.
From a geographical perspective, European countries imported the highest value of milk in 2024, with total purchases of $13.7 billion representing 40.2% of the global total. Close behind were Asian importers, which made up 39% of the world's purchases. Africa ranked third at 9.7%.
Smaller market shares came from Latin America (5.7%, excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean), North America (4.1%), and Oceania (1.2%)—with Australia, Fiji, and New Zealand as the main destinations.
The trade figures here combine data for two Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) codes: 0401 for unsweetened milk and 0402 for concentrated or sweetened milk. In 2024, unsweetened milk (HTS 0401) was valued at $12.8 billion, accounting for 37.5% of global imports, while sweetened milk (HTS 0402) made up $21.3 billion or 62.5%—down slightly from 65.3% in 2023.

Together, these 15 countries accounted for 59.5% of all global milk imports in 2024.
Since 2020, the fastest-growing milk import markets have been Poland (+68.2%), Germany (+57.3%), Belgium (+49.8%), and France (+47.6%).
On the other hand, some markets saw declines during the same period: Hong Kong (-31.4%), United Arab Emirates (-22.9%), and Mainland China (-17.1%).
