In 2024, global spending on imported rice amounted to US$38.3 billion.


Compared to 2020 when worldwide rice imports were valued at $27 billion, the overall figure has grown by an average 42.1%. On a year-to-year basis, international rice purchases expanded by 10.1%, up from $34.8 billion in 2023.


The five leading importers of rice were Indonesia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and Iraq. Collectively, these nations accounted for about 27.7% of global demand for imported rice.


From a regional perspective, Asia was the top market for imported rice in 2024, with purchases worth $19.1 billion, equal to 50% of the worldwide total. African buyers ranked second with 21.1%, while Europe represented 13.6% of global rice imports.


Smaller proportions were attributed to North America (6.93%), Latin America including the Caribbean but excluding Mexico (6.92%), and Oceania (1.4%), primarily Australia, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand.


For trade classification, rice is identified under the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code 1006.

Leading Rice Importing Countries in 2024

Below are the top 15 rice importers ranked by import value:

1.Indonesia: US$2.7 billion (7.1% of global imports)

2.Philippines: $2.5 billion (6.6%)

3.Saudi Arabia: $2 billion (5.2%)

4.Vietnam: $1.71 billion (4.5%)

5.Iraq: $1.66 billion (4.3%)

6.United States: $1.62 billion (4.2%)

7.Malaysia: $1.1 billion (2.9%)

8.Ivory Coast: $1 billion (2.6%)

9.Mainland China: $920.7 million (2.4%)

10.Senegal: $783.8 million (2%)

11.United Kingdom: $756.4 million (2%)

12.Iran: $711.9 million (1.9%)

13.Benin: $705.7 million (1.8%)

14.France: $686.1 million (1.8%)

15.United Arab Emirates: $685.8 million (1.8%)


Together, these 15 countries represented 51.1% of total rice imports worldwide in 2024, underscoring the broad geographic scope of rice demand.


Among these leading markets, the fastest-growing importers since 2023 were Vietnam (+93.1%), Senegal (+57.4%), Philippines (+54%), and Indonesia (+51.5%).


Conversely, two major markets saw declines: Iran (-48.5%) and Mainland China (-34.6%).
