Situated in Southeast Asia and strategically connected to major trading economies such as mainland China, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, and South Korea, Malaysia imported approximately US$340.3 billion worth of goods in 2025. Malaysia's imports continued to expand alongside the country's role as a regional manufacturing and re-export hub.

Compared with 2021, when imports totaled US$238.3 billion, Malaysia's imports increased by 42.8% over five years. On a year-over-year basis, Malaysia's imports also climbed significantly, rising 13.4% from US$300.1 billion recorded in 2024.

The Malaysian ringgit strengthened by 6.7% against the US dollar during 2025 based on average annual exchange rates. A stronger domestic currency reduced the relative cost of imported products priced in US dollars when converted into ringgit, helping support growth in Malaysia's imports.

Among Malaysia's most valuable imported products were integrated circuits and electronic microassemblies, refined petroleum products, computers and optical readers, crude oil, and mobile phones including smartphones. Together, these five categories represented 38.4% of Malaysia's imports spending in 2025.

Malaysia's imports accounted for around 1.4% of total global imports in 2024, with worldwide imports valued at roughly US$24.259 trillion.

Malaysia's Main Import Sources

Recent country-level trade data indicates that nearly 79.6% of Malaysia's imports originated from a relatively concentrated group of suppliers. Mainland China remained the largest source, contributing 24.3% of Malaysia's imports, followed by Singapore (10.5%), Taiwan (10%), the United States (9.2%), Japan (4.6%), South Korea (4.4%), Indonesia (4.3%), Thailand (3.8%), Vietnam (2.5%), Germany (2.1%), Australia (2.06%), and India (1.9%).

From a regional perspective, Asian economies supplied 73.9% of Malaysia's imports value in 2025. North America accounted for another 10%, while European countries contributed 8.5%. Smaller shares came from Latin America excluding Mexico (3%), Oceania led by Australia and New Zealand (2.5%), and Africa (2.1%).

With a population of approximately 33.9 million people, Malaysia's imports in 2025 equated to an average annual import demand of about US$10,050 per person, exceeding the previous year's average of US$9,000.
