In 2024, the worldwide trade in hazelnuts reached a value of US$2.54 billion.

Compared with 2020, when global hazelnut exports were worth $2.03 billion, shipments have risen by 25.6% over the five-year span. From 2023 to 2024, export revenues jumped by 28.9%, climbing from $1.97 billion.

Hazelnuts, also referred to as cobnuts or filberts, come from the fruits of hazel trees. These versatile nuts are widely used in confectionery products such as pralines, truffles, tortes, cakes, and in the production of hazelnut paste, flavorings, powders, and spreads.

The top five suppliers of hazelnuts in 2024—Türkiye, Chile, United States, Italy, and Azerbaijan—collectively accounted for 87.4% of total exports.

From a continental perspective, Asia was the leading exporter with sales worth $1.75 billion (68.8%), followed by Europe (15%), Latin America (9.3%), North America (6.9%), Oceania (0.01%) mainly from Tokelau and Australia, and Africa (0.005%).

On the demand side, the world's top five importers of hazelnuts in 2024 were Germany, Italy, France, Canada, and Russia. Together, they absorbed 69.5% of global imports.

This highlights a notable imbalance: while just 66 countries exported hazelnuts (with the top 5 commanding 87.4% of shipments), imports were spread across 165 countries and territories, where the top 5 accounted for a smaller 69.5% share.

By continent, most hazelnuts were purchased by European markets (75.9%), followed by North America (8.4%), Asia (7.8%), Africa (3.6%), Latin America (3.1%), and Oceania (1.1%) led by Australia and New Zealand.
