Japan's exports rose 4.3% year-over-year to $61.477 billion in September 2023, the first increase since June and a record high.

Shipments of transportation equipment rose 21.2% year-on-year, led by motor vehicles (26.9%) and automobiles (30.4%), while others rose 6.6%, driven by scientific and optical instruments (0.7%). In addition, sales of manufactured goods rose 2.2%, associated with nonferrous metals (2.9%); chemicals were up 1.8%, thanks to plastic materials (5.8%) and medical products (32.4%). In contrast, machinery exports fell 1.4%; the electrical machinery category declined 4%, dragged down by semiconductors (-8.0%) and electrical equipment (-7.7%).

Sales grew in Hong Kong (21.8%), India (11.4%), Australia (12.0%), Germany (6.9%), and the EU (12.9%); while declining to China (-6.2%), Taiwan (-9.7%), South Korea (-4.2%), Singapore (-17.6%), and Russia (-64.1%).
