In 2022, Zimbabwe imported US$6.431 billion worth of products, down 15.79% from US$7.6 billion in 2021.


Zimbabwe's five most valuable imports are processed petroleum, nitrogen fertilizers, soybean oil, blood components including antisera, and trucks.



Zimbabwe's Main Import Suppliers

The latest country-specific data shows that Zimbabwe's imports were sold mainly by exporters from South Africa (42.8% of Zimbabwe's global total), Singapore (13.8%), mainland China (12.1%), Mozambique (3.4%), Mauritius (2.9%), Zambia (2.7%), Hong Kong (2.5%), United Arab Emirates ( 2.2%), India (2.1%), United Kingdom (1.62%), Argentina (0.8%) and Russia (0.72%).

1. Mineral fuels including petroleum: $1.4 billion (18.9% of total imports)

2. Machinery including computers: $944.9 million (12.5%)

3. Vehicles: $577.6 million (7.6%)

4. Fertilizers: $441.3 million (5.8%)

5. Pharmaceuticals: $416.5 million (5.5%)

6. Electrical machinery and equipment: $336 million (4.4%)

7. Grains: $335.3 million (4.4%)

8. Plastics, plastic products: $298.6 million (3.9%)

9. Animal and vegetable fats, oils, waxes: $280.3 million (3.7%)

10. other chemicals: $276 million (3.6%)


Zimbabwe's top 10 imports accounted for 69.8% of its total product purchases from other countries. In second place was the product category fertilizers, which grew by 86%, ahead of imports of animal or vegetable fats, oils and waxes (up 63.6%) and imports of plastic materials and plastic products (up 53.6%).


The only category that declined compared to the same period last year was cereals, by -36.2%. The cereals that declined the most were maize, wheat and sorghum imported by Zimbabwe.




Export

Zimbabwe exported $2.8 billion worth of exports to the world in 2022. The total value of Zimbabwe's exports declined by -53.4% compared to $6.04 billion in 2021.



Zimbabwe's Main Trading Partners

The latest figures for Zimbabwe show that 94.4% of Zimbabwe's exports were purchased by importers in South Africa (48.4% of Zimbabwe's global total), the United Arab Emirates (28.6%), Mozambique (8.4%), China (4.2%), Belgium (2.2%), Zambia (1.0%), Botswana (0.6%), Ukraine (0.3%), France (0.18%), Vietnam (0.18%), Indonesia ( 0.17%) and the United States of America (0.15%).

1. Tobacco, artificial substitutes: $1 billion (36.1% of total exports)

2. Iron and steel: $556.4 million (19.8%)

3. Salt, sulfur, stone, cement: $251.7 million (8.9%)

4. Fossil fuels including oil: $212.3 million (7.5%)

5. Ore, slag, ash: $158.9 million (5.6%)

6. Cotton: $120.2 million (4.3%)

7. Gems, precious metals: $96.8 million (3.4%)

8. Fruits, nuts: $80.3 million (2.9%)

9. Sugar, confectionery: $30.7 million (1.1%)

10. Raw hides, non-fur, leather: US$27.8 million (1%)


Zimbabwe's top ten export commodities account for 90.6% of its total global exports.


Salt, sulphur, stone and cement are the fastest growing of the top ten export categories, growing by 316.2% from 2021 to 2022. Export sales improved. Second on the list was fossil fuels, which grew by 125%, expanding revenues from international sales of Zimbabwean coal and lignite or peat coke and semi-coke. Zimbabwe's fruit and nut exports ranked third in terms of value increase, up 120% from 2021.


Zimbabwe's top ten export category with the biggest decline was Gemstones and Precious Metals, down -95.1% year-on-year. The biggest losers under this product category included exports of gold and diamonds.


At the more detailed four-digit HS code level, Zimbabwe's most valuable export in 2022 is unprocessed tobacco including tobacco waste (34.7% of Zimbabwe's total). In second place are ferroalloys (16.1%), vermiculite and perlite (5.7%), chrome ores and concentrates (4.8%), coke and semi-coke (4.6%), ungummed and un-combed cotton (4.1%), and coal (including solids). fuels made from coal (2.9%), unset and unset diamonds (2.8%), monuments and building stones (2.6%), followed by pipes, chewing tobacco and pipe tobacco (1.4%).
