Imports

In 2022, Brazil imported $272.7 billion worth of goods from around the world. The overall cost of commodities imported by Brazil increased by 24.3% from $219.4 billion in 2021.


The majority of Brazil's spending is on imported products, which include processed petroleum, crude oil, potash, blended fertilizers, and then automotive parts.

The latest country-specific data show that Brazil's imports are supplied mainly by exporters from mainland China (35.6% of Brazil's global total), the United States (7.5%), Argentina (5.2%), Germany (5.1%), India (4%), Russia (2.8%), Italy (2.7%), South Korea (2.2%), Japan (2.2%), Saudi Arabia (1.8%), Mexico (1.7%) and Canada (1.3%).

1. Mineral fuels including oil: $49.5 billion (18.2% of total imports)

2. Machinery including computers: $33.9 billion (12.4%)

3. Electrical machinery and equipment: $31.6 billion (11.6%)

4. Fertilizers: $24.8 billion (9.1%)

5. Organic chemicals: $18.3 billion (6.7%)

6. Vehicles: $16.4 billion (6%)

7. Plastics, plastic products: $10.3 billion (3.8%)

8. Pharmaceuticals: $9.9 billion (3.6%)

9. Other chemicals: $9.5 billion (3.5%)

10. Optical, technical, medical equipment: $6.9 billion (2.5%)


Brazil's top 10 imports accounted for more than three-quarters (77.4%) of the total value of products it purchased from other countries.


The fastest-growing categories of Brazil's most expensive imports were fertilizers (up 63.4% from 2021), fossil fuels including petroleum (up 62.8%), miscellaneous chemicals (up 48.6%), organic chemicals (up 38.3%), and then machinery including computers (up 15.5%).


The only decline is a -9.9% decrease in Brazilian import spending from 2021 to 2022 due to a -9.9% slowdown.

Exports

Brazil exported $334.5 billion worth of products to the world in 2022. Brazil's total exports increased by 19.1% from $280.8 billion in 2021.


In 2022, Brazil's top 8 exports by value were soybeans, crude oil, iron ore and concentrates, processed petroleum, corn, sugar, frozen beef, and solid residues including soybean oil cake.



Brazil's Best International Trade Customers

The latest country-specific data show that Brazilian exports are mainly purchased by importers in mainland China (26.8% of Brazil's global total), the United States (11.3%), Argentina (4.6%), the Netherlands (3.6%), Spain (2.9%), Chile (2.7%), Singapore (2.5%), Mexico (2.1%), Japan (2%), India (1.9%), Germany (1.9%), and the United States (1.2%). 1.9%), Germany (1.9%) and South Korea (1.9%).

1. Fossil fuels including oil: $56.9 billion (17% of total exports)

2. Oilseeds: $47.2 billion (14.1%)

3. Ores, slag, ash: $32.4 billion (9.7%)

4. Meat: $24 billion (7.2%)

5. Steel: $16.7 billion (5%)

6. Grains: $13.9 billion (4.2%)

7. Machinery including computers: $12.44 billion (3.7%)

8. Vehicles: $12.39 billion (3.7%)

9. Sugar, confectionery: $11.24 billion (3.4%)

10. Industrial waste, animal feed: $11.15 billion (3.3%)


Brazil's top 10 exports are close to three-quarters (71.2%) of the value of its global exports.


Cereals are the fastest growing of the top ten export categories, growing 187.4% from 2021 to 2022. The cereals category is stimulated by increased export sales of corn. The second highest growth in export sales was in fossil fuels, including petroleum, which rose 48.2%. Brazil's exports of food industry waste and animal feed ranked third in terms of value growth, up 39.8% year-on-year.


The only decline in Brazil's top ten export categories was in ores, slag and ash, down -33.5%. This product category was dragged down by lower revenues from exports of iron ore or copper ores and concentrates.
