29-04-2025
In 2023, the global trade of cashew nuts reached approximately US$6.64 billion, maintaining a steady level compared to 2019's figure of $6.65 billion, reflecting a slight average decline of 0.1% over the past five years.
On a year-to-year basis, the total revenue from global cashew exports increased by 6.9% from $6.22 billion in 2022, indicating renewed demand for this popular tree nut.
Highly favored as a snack and valued for their rich, buttery flavor, cashews are harvested from the fruit of tall tropical evergreen trees that can grow up to 14 meters (46 feet). In addition to being enjoyed on their own, cashews are also used to produce cashew oil for cooking and salad dressings, as well as cashew butter.
In 2023, the top five cashew-exporting nations—Vietnam, Ivory Coast, India, Cambodia, and Nigeria—collectively accounted for 71.9% of global cashew shipments by value.
From a continental lens, Asia emerged as the dominant exporter, contributing cashew exports valued at $3.35 billion or 50.4% of the worldwide total. Africa followed with 39.2%, ahead of Europe (9%), Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean (1%), North America (0.3%), and Oceania (0.002%), primarily from Australia.
On the import side, the leading cashew importers in 2023 were Vietnam, India, the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands. These five countries together made up 66.8% of the global import value for cashews.
This contrast—110 cashew-exporting countries versus over 180 importing regions—suggests a higher concentration among exporters than importers.
By continent, Asia was the largest regional consumer of imported cashews, accounting for 57.9% of total imports, followed by Europe (24.4%), North America (14.5%), Oceania (1.7%), Africa (1.1%), and Latin America (0.4%).
