2025-09-28
In 2024, global shipments of garlic reached a total value of US$4.37 billion. This figure reflects a 36.9% increase compared with $3.2 billion exported in 2020.
On a year-to-year basis, garlic exports also showed strong momentum, climbing 27.5% from $3.43 billion in 2023.
Known for its strong, pungent flavor—often compared to horseradish or onions mixed with chives—garlic is widely used as a seasoning ingredient. Beyond the kitchen, garlic has also played a role in traditional medicine across many cultures, both in raw and cooked forms.
The international garlic trade is dominated by a handful of suppliers. The top five exporters—China, Spain, Argentina, the Netherlands, and Malaysia—accounted for 91.5% of worldwide garlic sales in 2024. This concentration highlights how dependent the market is on a small group of countries.
From a regional perspective:
·Asia led all continents, supplying 75% of global garlic exports, worth $3.3 billion.
·Europe ranked second with 16.8%, followed by Latin America (5.8%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.
·Smaller shares originated from North America (1.4%), Africa (0.9%), and Oceania (0.04%) led by New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji.
For classification, garlic falls under the 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code 070320.
