Excluding plantains, the global average export price for bananas reached US$614 per metric ton in 2024, marking a 5.3% increase compared with the US$583 per ton recorded in 2023.

Bananas intended for fresh consumption are often referred to as dessert bananas, distinguishing them from plantains, which are primarily used in cooking and food processing.

In 2024, Benin recorded the lowest average export price for bananas worldwide, at just US$103 per ton, reflecting its position as a low-cost West African supplier.

By contrast, Armenia, a landlocked country in southern Eurasia, ranked as the most expensive banana exporter, with an exceptionally high average price of US$25,000 per ton.

Measured by volume, global exports of fresh or dried bananas (excluding plantains) totaled approximately 24.66 million tons in 2024. This represents a year-on-year decline of 11.3% compared with 2023, and a relatively flat 0.3% decrease over the five-year period since 2020.

The largest banana exporters by shipment weight were Ecuador, Guatemala, the Philippines, Colombia, and Costa Rica. Together, these five countries accounted for nearly 66% of total global banana exports, highlighting their dominant role in the international banana trade.

For customs and trade analysis, bananas (excluding plantains) are classified under HS code 0803.
