In 2024, worldwide shipments of newsprint reached an estimated US$3.1 billion in total export value. Compared with 2020, when global newsprint exports stood at $2.94 billion, this reflects a modest 5.5% increase over five years.
Despite the longer-term growth, year-over-year performance weakened. The global value of exported newsprint dropped 14.3% from $3.62 billion in 2023.
The leading exporters in the international newsprint trade include Canada, Russia, Germany, France, and Belgium. Together, these five major suppliers accounted for approximately 70.1% of global newsprint exports during 2024.
From a regional perspective, European exporters dominated the market, shipping newsprint valued at $1.72 billion, representing 55.4% of total global exports. Producers in North America followed with 38.2%, while Asian suppliers contributed 3.9%. Smaller shares originated from Oceania (1.3%), Latin America including Caribbean markets but excluding Mexico (0.7%), and Africa (0.5%).
For trade classification purposes, newsprint in rolls or sheets falls under the Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code 4801.

Among the major suppliers, the fastest-growing exporters compared with 2023 were Malaysia (+69.2%), the United States (+35.5%), Australia (+7.4%), and Switzerland (+0.1%). On the other hand, notable declines were recorded by South Korea (−43.6%), Finland (−27.3%), Spain (−22%), Slovenia (−20.1%), and the United Kingdom (−19.4%).
