Export News
2026-05-21
Formerly called Ceylon, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka exported products valued at approximately US$14 billion to international markets in 2025. Sri Lanka's export economy continues to rely heavily on apparel, tea, rubber products, and gemstones.
Compared with export revenues of $13.3 billion in 2021, Sri Lankan exports recorded a 5.2% increase over the five-year period. On a year-over-year basis, the country's export earnings climbed sharply by 16.7% from $12 billion in 2024.
Based on the average exchange rate for 2025, the Sri Lankan rupee weakened slightly by -0.3% against the US dollar compared to the previous year. The softer local currency made Sri Lanka's exports somewhat more competitively priced for overseas buyers using stronger US dollars.
Situated in the Indian Ocean just south of India, Sri Lanka has developed a diversified export sector led primarily by clothing products and world-famous tea shipments.
