2026-07-03
Global exports of lentils reached an estimated US$3.45 billion in 2025. Compared with US$2.97 billion in 2021, worldwide lentil exports increased by 16.2% over the past five years.
Despite the longer-term growth, international shipments declined on a year-over-year basis. The value of global lentil exports fell 22.3% from US$4.43 billion in 2024, reflecting softer demand and changing market conditions.
Lentils are among the world's most widely consumed pulses, valued for their high nutritional content and versatility in cooking. They are a staple ingredient in many traditional cuisines.
In India, lentils are commonly prepared as dal and served daily with rice or roti. Since lentils and rice require similar cooking times, the two are often cooked or served together. Across Europe and throughout North and South America, lentils are frequently added to soups, salads, and a variety of vegetarian dishes.

Leading Lentils Exporting Countries
The global lentil export market is dominated by a handful of major suppliers. In 2025, the five largest exporters were Canada, Australia, Türkiye, Kazakhstan, and the United States.
Together, these countries accounted for 84.5% of total global lentil export value, demonstrating the highly concentrated nature of the international lentil trade.
Lentils Exports by Region
North America remained the largest exporting region in 2025, shipping lentils worth approximately US$1.42 billion, equivalent to 41.2% of global exports.
Asia ranked second with 25.5% of worldwide export value, followed closely by Oceania, which contributed 23.9%, largely driven by Australia's strong production.
Other regions accounted for relatively modest shares:
· Europe: 8.5%
· Africa: 0.7%
· Latin America (excluding Mexico): 0.1%
For customs and trade classification purposes, dried and shelled lentils are identified under HS Code 071340.
