In 2024, the international trade of cotton generated approximately $52.6 billion in export revenue across all participating countries.
This marks a 10.3% increase in global cotton export value compared to 2020, when total shipments stood at $47.7 billion. However, compared to the previous year, the market experienced a slight decline of -1.4%, falling from $53.3 billion recorded in 2023.
The dominant players in the global cotton trade include mainland China, India, the United States, Brazil, and Vietnam. Collectively, these five nations accounted for roughly 60.3% of total cotton exports in 2024, making them key drivers of the industry.
By continent, Asia was the largest contributor, representing 58.1% of the global cotton trade. North America followed with 12.3%, while Latin America (excluding Mexico and including the Caribbean) contributed 11.4%. European exporters held a 9.1% share.
Smaller portions of exports originated from Oceania (4.8%), led by Australia, and Africa (4.3%).
Cotton and its various forms—including raw cotton, yarn, threads, and woven fabrics—fall under the Harmonized System Code prefix 52.
