In 2023, global sales of exported pesticides reached a total of $43.6 billion. This represents an average increase of 19.4% compared to five years earlier, when shipments were valued at $36.5 billion in 2019. However, there was a year-over-year decline of 13% from the $50.1 billion recorded in 2022.


The top five pesticides exporters in 2023 were mainland China, the United States, India, France, and Germany. Together, these major suppliers accounted for nearly 57.4% of total international pesticide sales.


Among continents, Asia led with $19 billion in pesticide exports, making up 43.6% of the global total. Europe followed closely with 39%, while North America contributed 12.2%. Smaller shares came from Latin America (3.9%, excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean), Africa (0.9%), and Oceania (0.3%), primarily from Australia and New Zealand.

Types of Exported Pesticides

For classification purposes, the Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for exported pesticides is 3808, which includes categories such as herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, disinfectants, rodenticides, and other plant protection products. Here’s a breakdown of the most valuable types of pesticides exported in 2023:

· Herbicides: 36.9% of total exports

· Insecticides: 24.3%

· Fungicides: 23.4%

· Disinfectants: 7.6%

· Rodenticides and other plant protection products: 4.1%

Among these categories, disinfectants experienced the smallest decline, with a drop of 3.5% in export sales from 2022 to 2023.

These 15 countries together accounted for 82.6% of all globally exported pesticides in 2023.


Among the leading pesticides exporters, Spain showed the fastest growth since 2022, increasing by 5.3%, followed by Hungary (up 4.3%), South Korea (up 2.8%), and Poland (up 1.1%). On the other hand, major suppliers that experienced declines included mainland China (down 27.2%), India (down 22.1%), the United States (down 12.5%), Israel (down 11.5%), and Belgium (down 10.7%).
