In 2023, the total value of platinum exports worldwide reached approximately $50.2 billion.


Over the past five years, from 2019 to 2023, the value of platinum exports increased by 23.1%, rising from $40.8 billion. However, on a year-over-year basis, global platinum exports declined by 30.9%, dropping from $72.7 billion in 2022.


The top five platinum-exporting nations were South Africa, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany. Collectively, these key suppliers accounted for 68.9% of the global platinum exports in 2023.


Breaking down platinum shipments by region, the European continent led the global market, exporting $25.8 billion worth of platinum—accounting for 51.4% of total exports.


Africa ranked second, contributing 21.6% of worldwide platinum exports.


Asia accounted for 13.9%, while North America supplied 12.8%.


Latin America (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean) contributed 0.2%, while Oceania (mainly Australia and New Zealand) represented 0.1% of global platinum shipments.


For classification purposes, the Harmonized Tariff System (HS) code 7110 is used for unwrought or semi-manufactured platinum, which also covers palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium, and ruthenium.

Below are the 15 leading platinum-exporting nations, ranked by the total value of platinum exported in 2023:

1.South Africa – $10.7 billion (21.4% of global exports)

2.Russia – $6.8 billion (13.6%)

3.United Kingdom – $6.4 billion (12.8%)

4.United States – $6.2 billion (12.3%)

These 15 countries together accounted for 97.5% of all platinum exported globally in 2023.


Among the leading exporters, Hong Kong was the only country to see an increase in platinum exports, recording a 31.6% growth since 2022.


Conversely, several key exporters saw significant declines in their platinum trade:
