According to the latest report from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, global rice production in 2024/25 is projected to reach a record high of 543.3 million metric tons (milled basis). India will account for the majority of this growth. However, strong harvests in Cambodia, China, and Tanzania will also contribute to the global supply, offsetting weather-related declines in countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Myanmar.

Global rice trade in 2025 (January to December) is projected to reach 60 million metric tons, up 1.0% year-over-year. Ending stocks for 2024/25 are forecast to hit a record 205.9 million metric tons, up 3.2%, reflecting increased stockpiling by importers and higher inventories among exporters.

According to the USDA, India is expected to surpass Thailand in 2025 to become the world’s largest rice exporter again, with exports projected at 22.5 million metric tons—an increase of 26.4% year-over-year. Thailand and Vietnam are projected to export 7.5 million and 5.3 million metric tons, respectively, representing year-over-year declines of 24.2% and 17%. Pakistan’s exports are expected to reach 5.3 million metric tons, down 18.2%. India’s re-entry into the export market, after a long ban aimed at increasing domestic reserves, has intensified competition—especially for Thai rice. India remains the most competitively priced exporter due to its record-high production and abundant stocks.
