In 2024, the international trade of electricity generated a total of $59.8 billion USD in export revenues for all participating countries.
This figure reflects a 105.1% increase compared to 2020, when worldwide electricity exports stood at $29.2 billion. However, on a year-over-year basis, global electricity exports declined by 16.5%, dropping from $71.7 billion in 2023.
The leading exporters of electricity in 2024 were France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovakia—all based in Europe. Combined, these five nations accounted for 35.8% of all electricity exported worldwide.
Regional Distribution
When analyzing electricity exports by continent, Europe dominated the global market, shipping $45.8 billion worth of electrical energy—equivalent to 76.5% of total exports.

·Africa accounted for 3.6%
·Latin America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico) contributed 3.4%
