Global vanilla exports reached US$304.3 million in 2025, reflecting another challenging year for the international vanilla trade.

Compared with US$946.5 million recorded in 2021, the total value of worldwide vanilla exports declined by 67.9% over the past five years. On an annual basis, export earnings also dropped significantly, falling 29.1% from US$429.2 million in 2024.

Vanilla is derived from the pods of orchids, most notably the flat-leaved vanilla orchid originally associated with Mexico. Today, it is one of the world's most valuable natural flavorings, widely used in baking, confectionery, beverages, dairy products, perfumes, cosmetics, and aromatherapy.

In terms of export value, Madagascar remained the world's largest vanilla exporter in 2025, followed by France, Germany, Uganda, and Canada. Together, these five countries accounted for 74.7% of total global vanilla exports, highlighting the concentration of production and trade among a handful of suppliers.

Located off the southeastern coast of Africa, Madagascar continues to dominate the global vanilla market thanks to its ideal growing conditions and long-established cultivation industry.

Looking at exports by region, Africa contributed the largest share of global vanilla exports in 2025, generating US$149.7 million, or 49.2% of worldwide export value. Europe ranked second with 31.8%, followed by North America (7.6%), Asia (6.8%), and Oceania (4.3%), led by Papua New Guinea. Latin America, excluding Mexico but including Caribbean nations, represented a relatively small
0.3% of total exports.

On the import side, the United States was the world's largest vanilla importer in 2025. Other major importing countries included France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Canada. Collectively, these five markets purchased 73.5% of all vanilla imported worldwide by value.

The trade distribution also shows that while only 84 countries exported vanilla in 2025, imports were spread across 149 countries and territories. Although the leading five exporters controlled 74.7% of export value, the top five importers represented a slightly smaller 73.5% share of global imports, indicating somewhat broader demand across international markets.

From a continental perspective, Europe was the largest destination for vanilla imports, accounting for 56.1% of global purchases. North America ranked second with 33.5%, followed by Asia (6.2%), Africa (2.3%), and both Latin America (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean) and Oceania at 0.9% each. Australia and New Zealand remained the primary importers within Oceania.

For customs classification, vanilla is identified under two 6-digit Harmonized System (HS) codes: 090510 for whole vanilla beans that are neither crushed nor ground, and 090520 for crushed or ground vanilla.

By product category, non-crushed and unground vanilla represented 83.2% of global vanilla export value in 2025, down from 91.6% in 2024. Meanwhile, crushed or ground vanilla accounted for the remaining 16.8%, reflecting a growing share of processed vanilla products in international trade.
