Brazilian Beef Lobby Chief: U.S. Imports of Brazilian Beef Surge Despite New Tariffs
Roberto Perosa, head of Brazil's beef lobbying group Abiec, said on Thursday that Brazilian meat exporters sold approximately 48,000 metric tons of beef to the United States last month, despite Washington's new 10% tariff.
Speaking at a press conference, Perosa said the volume was "astonishing," especially considering that Brazil sold only around 8,000 tons of beef to U.S. importers during the same period last year.
Perosa noted that China remains the primary export destination for Brazilian beef products, but the severe beef shortage in the U.S. has fueled increased demand for imported beef, including shipments from Brazil and Australia.
Citing data from consultancy firm Datagro, Perosa stated that Brazil may overtake the United States as the world's largest beef producer by 2026, as American ranchers struggle to expand cattle herds and companies tend to reduce beef output.
Brazil is already the world's largest beef exporter.
Previously, U.S. tariffs on Brazilian beef stood at 26.4% for volumes exceeding an annual 65,000-ton quota. Now, an additional 10% tariff applies. Perosa explained that even beef sales within the quota—which were previously duty-free—are now subject to a 10% tariff.
The annual 65,000-ton quota was exhausted in January.
Next week, representatives from Brazil's beef packing companies will accompany President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on a state visit to China. According to Perosa, this delegation will visit two inland cities for the first time to promote Brazilian beef products.
He added that so far this year, China's imports of Brazilian beef have increased by around 12%, reaching approximately 392,000 metric tons.
While Perosa does not expect China to issue new licenses for Brazilian beef exporters in the short term, he said Beijing is set to conclude its safeguard investigation into overall beef imports next year, which may lead to the approval of new suppliers.
