In 2024, the total global value of paint exports from all countries reached US $26 billion.
This figure reflects a 20.4% growth compared to the $21.6 billion recorded in 2020. On a year-over-year basis, the worldwide trade in paints experienced only a slight increase of 0.2%, up from $25.97 billion in 2023.
Paints made from synthetic or chemically modified natural polymers dominated the market, accounting for $25.2 billion, or 96.8% of all paint exports. In contrast, paints from non-synthetic sources represented just 3.2% of the total ($838.1 million), slightly down from 3.3% in the previous year.
The top five paint-exporting nations—Germany, the United States, Italy, Japan, and Belgium—together supplied 45.8% of the world's exported paints in 2024.
Europe remained the largest supplier, with paint exports totaling $15.6 billion, representing 60% of the world total. Asian exporters followed with 22.7%, while North America contributed 13.3%.
Smaller market shares came from Latin America (2.1%, excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean), Africa (1.4%), and Oceania (0.5%), led by Australia and New Zealand.
For classification purposes, paints and varnishes (including enamels and lacquers) made from synthetic or chemically modified natural polymers are categorized under HS codes 3208 and 3209, while paints made from other materials fall under HS code 3210. Pigments, opacifiers, and coloring preparations under HS code 3207 are excluded from this report.

The fastest-growing exporters since 2020 were Türkiye (+98.2%), Mainland China (+68.2%), Belgium (+59.1%), and Malaysia (+48.3%). Conversely, Japan (-9.9%) and Sweden (-3.1%) experienced declines over the same period.
