In 2023, the agricultural and fisheries sectors of Spain demonstrated remarkable performance, achieving a new milestone in export revenue.

A recent announcement by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA) revealed that the combined export value of these industries reached €70.43 billion in 2023.

This achievement not only represents a 3% increase over the forecast for 2022 but also marks the first time surpassing the €70 billion threshold.

Significant Economic Contribution

After evaluating the data, Minister Luis Planas stated, "The balance of agricultural, food, and fisheries sectors is recovering after the downturn in 2022, with a growth of 10%, reaching €15.47 billion."

He further commented on the vitality of the industry, highlighting its role as a cornerstone of national economic growth and Spain's position as a leading agricultural food powerhouse.

The 3% growth rate of the sector exceeds the overall economic performance, with agricultural exports accounting for 18.4% of Spain's total international sales and imports representing 13%.

Export Dynamics and Import Growth

Imports saw a modest increase of 1.2%, totaling €54.96 billion, slightly below. The leading export categories were the meat industry, generating €10.3 billion, followed closely by fruits and vegetables, generating nearly €9.98 billion and over €8.86 billion, respectively.

It is noteworthy that exports in the vegetable and legume sectors saw a significant increase of 9.9% compared to the previous year.

Diversified Destinations and Global Influence

Exports in 2023 were heavily tilted towards the European Union, with 67.4% of exports flowing into the EU, an increase of 8.2% from 2022.
