In 2023, the total expenditure on imported knitted or crocheted T-shirts around the world amounted to approximately US$45 billion.
This figure represents a 7.2% increase compared to 2019, when global T-shirts imports stood at $41.9 billion. However, year-over-year data shows a decline of -10.4% from $50.2 billion in 2022.
Europe dominated the international T-shirt import market, with purchases reaching $23.1 billion, which equates to 51.3% of global imports in 2023. Asia was the second-largest importer with 21%, followed by North America accounting for 19.4%.
Less significant shares went to Latin America (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean) at 4.4%, Oceania—primarily Australia and New Zealand—at 2.1%, and African nations at 1.7%.
Cotton remained the preferred fabric for T-shirt production, making up $32.1 billion, or 71.4% of total T-shirt imports in 2023. Apparel made from alternative materials totaled $12.5 billion, which covered the remaining 28.6%.
T-shirts fall under the Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code 6109, with cotton variants categorized as 610910, and those made from other fabrics listed under 610990.

Here are the 15 countries that spent the most on importing knitted or crocheted T-shirts last year:
1.United States: $6.9 billion (15.4% of global imports)
2.Germany: $4.2 billion (9.4%)
3.France: $2.6 billion (5.7%)
4.United Kingdom: $2.2 billion (4.9%)
5.Italy: $2.09 billion (4.7%)
6.Japan: $2.07 billion (4.6%)
7.Spain: $2 billion (4.5%)
8.Netherlands: $1.6 billion (3.6%)
9.Poland: $1.30 billion (2.9%)
10.Belgium: $1.08 billion (2.4%)
11.South Korea: $1.03 billion (2.3%)
12.Hong Kong: $1.01 billion (2.2%)
13.Mainland China: $945 million (2.1%)
14.Canada: $930.1 million (2.1%)
15.Mexico: $882.0 million (2%)
Together, these 15 countries were responsible for 68.7% of the total global value of imported T-shirts in 2023.
Since 2019, the biggest surges in T-shirt imports occurred in Mexico (up 55.8%), Poland (up 54%), Canada (up 21.3%), and Italy (up 16.9%).
On the other hand, several major importers saw declines in 2023 compared to 2022, notably the United Kingdom (-18.5%), Belgium (-16.2%), Japan (-14.8%), and mainland China (-1.1%).
