In 2024, worldwide corn imports reached an estimated value of US$51.4 billion.


This figure marks a 23.9% increase compared to 2020, when global corn purchases totaled $41.5 billion. However, on a year-over-year basis, the market saw a notable decline of 19.8% from $64.2 billion in 2023.


The top five importers of corn in 2024 were Mexico, Japan, mainland China, South Korea, and Vietnam. Collectively, these nations accounted for 36.7% of total global expenditure on imported corn.


In terms of regions, Asian nations led corn import spending in 2024, with a combined total of $22.3 billion, representing 43.4% of the global market. European countries followed with 21.6%, while North America received 12.9% of worldwide corn imports.


Imports to Latin America (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean) made up 11.7%, while Africa accounted for 10.3%. The smallest share went to Oceania, with just 0.04%, led by Australia, New Zealand, the Marshall Islands, and Papua New Guinea.


For classification, the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) code for corn is 1005.

2.Japan: $3.9 billion (7.7%)

3.Mainland China: $3.8 billion (7.4%)

5.Vietnam: $2.5 billion (4.9%)

6.Spain: $2.1 billion (4.2%)

7.Egypt: $1.82 billion (3.5%)

8.Italy: $1.79 billion (3.5%)

9.Colombia: $1.6 billion (3.1%)

10.Netherlands: $1.3 billion (2.5%)

11.Saudi Arabia: $1.2 billion (2.3%)

12.Taiwan: $1.1 billion (2.1%)

14.Malaysia: $1.03 billion (2.0%)

15.Türkiye: $1.03 billion (2.0%)

Combined, these 15 countries were responsible for approximately 64% of global corn import value in 2024.


Import Trends by Country

Among these major importers, Türkiye showed the strongest growth in corn demand, with imports rising 71.6% from 2023. Other increases came from Saudi Arabia (+20.4%) and Mexico (+2.8%). On the other hand, Malaysia saw a 6.7% decline.

Sharp downturns in import volume were seen in:

·Egypt: -25.7%

·Japan: -19.8%
