India's Growing Demand for Solar panels
India is turning up the juice on its clean energy transition, and solar panels are vital to it.
India imported more than 8200 mega-watts of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules in 2024 worth more than $2.6 billion. This is a 35% increase from 2023 demonstrating the rapid increase of India's solar aspirations.
Why is this happening? The simple answer is that all this is happening is the result of India committing to attaining 280 GW of solar energy by 2030 which is increasing demand for solar equipment on an unprecedented scale. Large projects in multiple states (i.e. Gujarat and Rajasthan) being executed as solar park projects are simply exasperating and fueling demand. Government incentives, and lowering prices of panels are also playing a role in the increase of demand.
As local capacity builds, India will continue relying on importing PV modules and related products for the foreseeable future. Additionally, India will continue to rely on imports of high-efficiency modules employed in large-scale utility projects.

What Solar Related Imports is India doing?
The top three imports of solar products to India in 2024 were associated to:
1. Monocrystalline PV modules
2. Bifacial solar panels
3. Unassembled solar cells
All of these products were the base components of India's clean energy infrastructure. The monocrystalline modules which are typically in high demand from grid connected solar farms because of their efficiencies are increasing dramatically.
Interestingly, the bifacial panels achieved the fastest growth this year being up 60% year over year. Not surprising since they were capturing sunlight from both sides.
Who's Supplying India?
India's solar panel imports come mostly from a handful of Asian manufacturing giants:
China – 73% market share (~$2.1 billion)
Vietnam – 6% (~$170 million)
Malaysia – 4% (~$115 million)
China remains the top supplier thanks to competitive pricing and large-scale production capacity. However, rising import tariffs and India’s domestic manufacturing push are opening doors for other exporters.
If you're a supplier from Vietnam, Malaysia, or other emerging solar exporters, now’s the time to build relationships with Indian importers.

India's Solar Exports: Small but Growing
While imports dominate, India is also starting to export solar tech—mostly off-grid systems, inverters, and smaller PV units.
In 2024, India exported about $210 million in solar-related products, mostly to:
Africa
Middle East
Southeast Asia
These markets are looking for affordable, decentralized solar solutions—and India is stepping up.
What's Driving Solar Market Growth?
Key drivers of India's solar boom include:
Government subsidies & tenders for solar park development
Falling costs of PV modules and batteries
Corporate clean energy targets (especially in IT and manufacturing sectors)
Improved grid infrastructure in rural areas
Together, these factors are turning India into one of the world’s hottest solar markets for both suppliers and project developers.
