In 2022, the global expenditure on imported cheese reached US$39.2 billion.
Since 2018, the total value of cheese imports has risen by 20.7%, up from $32.5 billion when cheese was purchased internationally. On a year-over-year basis, the value of cheese imported worldwide increased by 6.3% from $36.9 billion in 2021.
The top five cheese-importing countries in 2022 were all European nations: Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Belgium. These five countries collectively accounted for 38% of the global expenditure on imported cheese in 2022.
Looking at the data by continent, European countries were the largest importers of cheese in 2022, with imports valued at $27.2 billion, representing 69.3% of the global total. Asian nations followed, accounting for 16.1% of global cheese imports, while 7.2% of the cheese was imported by North American countries.
Smaller shares of cheese imports were recorded in Latin America (3.9%, excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean), Africa (1.8%), and Oceania (1.7%), with Australia and New Zealand being the primary importers in that region.

These 15 countries accounted for 66.3% of the world’s cheese imports in 2022.
Among these nations, the fastest-growing markets for cheese imports since 2021 were Mexico (up 36.9%), Spain (up 28.9%), Greece (up 24.1%), and Italy (up 23.4%).
Conversely, Mainland China saw a decrease in cheese imports, with a 5.4% decline compared to 2021.
