Do importers and exporters need to develop customers through multiple channels?
Not necessarily! Doing business is like driving—if you've already found a fast and stable route, there's no need to detour just to try another path.
For example, if you've found that using global trade data to find customers works well and yields high conversion rates, then it's better to increase your budget, strengthen your team, and expand this route further. Don't always think, "Should I try Facebook? Should I build an independent website?" Every new path requires learning new rules, adjusting strategies, and investing time. It might only lead to confusion.
Recently, a friend of mine in the import-export business successfully developed a big client using global trade data—and it wasn't a small order either. Below are several trade data websites he personally uses and is now sharing with everyone!
1. Global Trade Data
Website: www.tendata.com
This trade data platform allows you to search trade data from over 228 countries using product keywords, HS codes, or company names. It includes a list of over 500 million companies and 850 million+ contact details. You can manage the entire customer development process on a single platform—and even assess whether a customer currently has purchasing demand or the likelihood of successful conversion.
If you're looking to develop import-export customers in more countries, this is worth trying. The main benefit is higher efficiency, which is great for regular outreach.
Example: Searching HS code 870323 will give you a global list of car buyers. In 2024 alone, there were 227,491 buyers with recorded car purchases. You can view the detailed trade data for each buyer, making further analysis much easier.
2. U.S. Trade Data
(1)https://www.importyeti.com/
This platform focuses on U.S. trade data, offering detailed shipping information and supplier data. Users can access U.S. buyers' company names, addresses, supplier details, purchase volumes, prices, and shipping methods for free. You can also set a specific time frame to track purchasing frequency.
Note: This platform only covers the U.S. and does not provide data for other countries.
(2)https://www.importinfo.com/
This platform allows users to check a company's total shipping volume, latest shipment date, historical shipping data, supplier info, and competitors. It's useful for background checks to confirm whether a target customer is an importer and to view their detailed transaction and supplier history.
(3)http://www.importersinusa.com/
This platform also supports U.S. customer searches but offers a smaller data set. It's useful as a supplementary source.
3. U.K. Trade Data
Website: https://www.uktradeinfo.com/
This trade data platform is operated by HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs), and its data is authoritative and updated quickly. Users can view detailed import/export statistics between the U.K. and other countries, including product categories, trade partners, and trade volumes. It provides both regular monthly reports and customizable queries, with downloadable tables.
However, you'll need to read the official guide before using it, and the platform only shows buyer information—not seller data. Also, the downloaded data requires manual organization, which may be slightly inconvenient.
