Imports

Yemen's total imports in 2022 amount to $9 billion. Compared to $11.8 billion in 2021, the cost of Yemen's imports decreased by -24.1% year-over-year.



Yemen's Top 10 Imports

1. Cereals: $1.1 billion (17% of total imports)

2. Mineral fuels including oil: $781.1 million (12.1%)

3. Vehicles: $372.6 million (5.8%)

4. Electrical machinery, equipment: $287.6 million (4.5%)

5. Sugar, confectionery: $230 million (3.6%)

6. Knitted or crocheted clothing, accessories: $223.3 million (3.5%)

7. Plastics, plastic products: $211.3 million (3.3%)

8. Machinery, including computers: $204.1 million (3.2%)

9. Cereal/milk products: $198.5 million (3.1%)

10. Steel: $191.5 million (3%)


Yemen's top ten imports account for almost three-fifths (58.9%) of the total value of products it purchases from other countries.


Imported footwear had the strongest growth among Yemen's top 10 import categories, increasing by 62.5% over the five-year period starting in 2018. In second place was cereal or dairy products (up 55.3%), followed by grains (up 45.4%) followed by knitted or crocheted clothing and accessories (up 36.2%).


Yemen's imports of plastics (either materials or plastic products) are the only product category to decline between 2021 and 2022.



Exports

In 2022, Yemen exported $1.71 billion worth of products to the world. Compared to $2.2 billion in 2021, exports shrank -22.1%.


The top 5 most valuable products exported from Yemen were crude oil, iron or steel scrap, mollusks, copper scrap, and frozen whole fish.


Yemen's Main Trading Partners

The latest country-specific data show that Yemen's exports were mainly purchased by importers from Saudi Arabia (35.6 percent of Yemen's global total), Oman (18.8 percent), Somalia (7.3 percent), Japan (6 percent), the United Arab Emirates (5.1 percent), Egypt (3.4 percent), the United States of America (2.6 percent), Germany (2.4 percent), and Djibouti (2.3%), the United Kingdom (1.9%), Thailand (1.6%) and then mainland China (1.5%).

1. Fossil fuels including oil: $1.1 billion (66.6% of total exports)

2. Fish: $141.3 million (8.3%)

3. Iron and steel: $113.3 million (6.6%)

4. Electrical machinery and equipment: $92.4 million (5.4%)

5. Copper: $54.9 million (3.2%)

6. Plastics, plastic products: $36.2 million (2.1%)

7. Aluminum: $30.3 million (1.8%)

8. Food industry waste, animal feed: $15.7 million (0.9%)

9. Aircraft, spacecraft: $13.2 million (0.8%)

10. Perfumes, cosmetics: $12.6 million (0.7%)


Yemen's top 10 export categories accounted for 96.1% of its total global exports by value.


Perfumes and cosmetics are the fastest growing of the top ten export categories, growing by 4,598% from 2021 to 2022. The second highest improvement in export sales was in steel and metal, which grew by 1,084%. Yemen's exports of plastic materials and plastic products ranked third in terms of volume increase, growing by 510.4 percent.


The only decline in Yemen's top 10 export categories was fish, down -2.2% year-on-year.


At the more detailed 4-digit HS code level, crude oil was Yemen's most valuable export, accounting for two-thirds (64.7%) of the Middle Eastern country's total exports. In second place was iron or steel scrap (6.6%), followed by molluscs (3.6%), copper scrap (3%), frozen whole fish (2.9%), telephony equipment, including smartphones (2.8%), e-waste (2%), plastics scrap (1.9%), aluminum scrap (1.7%), and then bran and other residues (0.8%).
