Trade data released on August 6 shows that Brazil's fresh beef exports reached a record 276,900 metric tons in July, surging ahead of the United States' imposition of steep tariffs on Brazilian beef. Brazil is the world's largest beef exporter.
The data indicates that July's beef shipments rose nearly 17% from the same period last year, surpassing the previous monthly record of 270,300 tons set in October 2024.
About 12% of Brazil's beef exports go to the United States, which is Brazil's second-largest beef market after China. Other key markets include Mexico and the Middle East.
Astra, a Brazilian exporter based in Paraná state, sells about 5% of its products to the United States. The company said it shipped orders earlier this week to avoid the new tariffs taking effect today.
Astra sends beef to nearly every U.S. port.
“We don't know what's going to happen,” said Diogo Oliveira, Astra's export coordinator, in an interview. “My business volume with the U.S. is small but consistent. From September onward, I'm not sure if we'll have more orders.”
Brazil's beef sales have been rising steadily this year, driven by strong demand from major importers.
In the first half of the year, Brazil exported 181,400 tons of beef to the United States, which continues to face supply shortages, and 631,800 tons to China.
