A Decade of Export Growth Reshapes Italy's Economic Standing

Italy has achieved a milestone that few observers would have predicted ten years ago. According to data cited by Il Sole 24 Ore and confirmed by international institutions, Italy has overtaken Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest exporter, ranking behind China, United States, and Germany.

This shift has been validated by seasonally adjusted current-dollar data compiled by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). By the third quarter of 2025, Italy’s export value had surpassed Japan’s, solidifying a trend that had already begun to emerge the previous year.

A Ten-Year Climb

Just a decade ago, Italy ranked seventh worldwide in export value. Since then, it has steadily advanced, becoming one of the strongest-performing advanced industrial economies. Today, exports account for roughly 40% of Italy’s gross domestic product, underscoring the central role foreign markets play in its economic model.

This growth has also reinforced Italy’s position within Europe. The country now stands as the European Union’s second-largest exporter, trailing only Germany, further strengthening its role as a key manufacturing and trading power on the continent.

The Strength of the Italian Model

At the heart of Italy’s success lies its distinctive production structure. Thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises, often clustered in highly specialized industrial districts, export high-value goods spanning machinery, pharmaceuticals, food products, fashion, and design. Deeply rooted in local communities yet globally oriented, these firms combine flexibility, craftsmanship, and advanced technology.

Market diversification has been another critical factor. Italian exporters have expanded well beyond traditional European destinations, strengthening their presence in North America, Asia, and emerging markets. This broader geographic reach has helped cushion the effects of regional economic slowdowns.

A Symbolic Overtaking—With Limits

Surpassing Japan—a country with a much larger population and historically strong industrial base—carries significant symbolic weight. It highlights the competitiveness of the “Made in Italy” brand and demonstrates how a mid-sized economy can punch above its weight in global trade.

However, this achievement does not eliminate Italy’s structural challenges. Heavy reliance on exports leaves the economy vulnerable to global shocks, while domestic demand in certain sectors remains relatively weak. Productivity gaps, demographic pressures, and high energy costs continue to constrain Italy’s long-term growth prospects.

A Turning Point for Italy’s Economy

Nevertheless, becoming the world’s fourth-largest exporter marks a clear turning point. At a time of geopolitical tension and economic uncertainty, Italy’s export performance shows that a diversified industrial base—anchored in specialized firms and high-quality production—can deliver resilience and global influence.

The next challenge will be ensuring that this export strength translates into broader and more balanced growth at home.
