90% of U.S. Avocados Come from Mexico - Tendata

As demand has surged, avocados have become nearly ubiquitous in American society, available everywhere from fast-food chains to upscale restaurants. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), avocado consumption in the U.S. has more than doubled since 2001.

The seeds of this growth are firmly planted in Mexico.

The USDA reports that about 90% of the avocados consumed in the U.S. come from Mexico, with total imports expected to reach $2.7 billion in 2024.

According to the California Avocado Commission (CAC), California is the primary avocado-growing region in the U.S., accounting for around 90% of domestic avocado production. The remaining production comes from Hawaii and Florida. However, California's avocado industry can only satisfy a small portion of the vast demand.

"We are now just a small player in the overall picture," says Mary Lu Arpaia, a subtropical horticulture extension specialist at the University of California, Riverside.

According to the CAC, California avocado production peaked in the early 2000s, and since then, both acreage and production have declined.

"The cost of production in California is very, very high," Arpaia notes. "We have limited water, and the water quality is poor... Real estate prices are extremely expensive."

This issue isn’t limited to avocados: U.S. agricultural production has been shrinking overall. For the first time in history, USDA reports that avocado imports have exceeded domestic production.

"Mexico has almost always been an efficient, low-cost producer," says Richard Sexton, a professor of agricultural and resource economics at the University of California, Davis.

More than 80% of Mexico's avocado exports go to the U.S., and the industry continues to grow. In 2022, Jalisco became the second state in Mexico to meet certain requirements, allowing it to trade avocados with the U.S., opening up more opportunities for other farms and other fruits to enter the market.
