Beef imports surge, with China becoming an extremely important market for countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Australia.

On January 3, China's Ministry of Commerce announced that, following requests from representatives of the struggling domestic beef industry, it would launch an investigation into beef imports.

In recent years, domestic beef prices in China have been on a downward trend, with analysts attributing this to oversupply and weak demand, as China, the world's second-largest economy, experiences a slowdown in economic growth.

At the same time, imports have surged, and China has become a crucial market for beef exporters from countries such as Brazil, Argentina, and Australia.

The Ministry of Commerce stated that the investigation was initiated after a request from domestic associations, which claimed that the significant increase in beef imports in recent years had "severely impacted the domestic industry."

Reports indicate that beef imports in 2023 were 65% higher than in 2019.

The announcement confirmed that the investigation began on January 3 and is expected to last for eight months, although it could be extended under special circumstances.

During the investigation, normal trade activities will not be affected.

As the world's largest beef exporter, Brazil stated that it "will work to prove that the export of Brazilian beef to China does not harm China's beef industry. On the contrary, it is an important complement to domestic beef production in China."

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted, "In principle, no preliminary measures will be taken. The 12% ad valorem tariff on beef imports will continue to apply."

Brazil's statement emphasized that its main trading partner, China, imported more than 1 million tons of Brazilian beef this year, an increase of 12.7% compared to the same period last year.

The Brazilian government also expressed its commitment to protecting Brazil's agricultural sector and "has always sought constructive dialogue with China to find mutually beneficial solutions."
