Nigeria Imports Danish Dairy Cows to Cut $1.5 Billion Milk Import Bill

Nigeria's Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, announced on Monday that the country is importing dairy cows from Denmark with the goal of doubling milk production within five years. This move is part of a broader strategy to reduce Nigeria's reliance on imported dairy products, which currently costs the country $1.5 billion annually.

Despite being one of Africa's largest cattle-owning nations, Nigeria struggles to produce enough milk for its population. Currently, the country produces 700,000 tons of milk annually, while national consumption stands at 1.6 million tons, leaving a 60% supply gap filled by imports.

The Nigerian government has launched an ambitious but achievable plan to tackle the issue.

“Our goal is to double Nigeria's milk production from 700,000 tons to 1.4 million tons annually within five years,” Minister Maiha stated.

Maiha attributed the production shortfall to the low-yielding local cattle breeds that make up Nigeria's herd of over 20 million cattle. These indigenous breeds do not produce as much milk as modern dairy cows.

To address this, Nigeria has started importing high-quality dairy cows from Denmark. One local farm has already brought in over 200 heifers (young female cows) and is using intensive farming techniques to expand the herd with these high-yield dairy breeds.

The government is also implementing additional initiatives to boost milk output. For the first time in 48 years, eight new types of pasture grasses have been officially registered, aiming to provide better nutrition for cattle and thus enhance milk production.

Furthermore, with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Nigeria has launched a national strategy for managing animal genetic resources.

Minister Maiha emphasized that Nigeria is not starting from scratch in this effort:

“We already have over 20.9 million cattle, 60 million sheep, and 1.4 million goats. We are not starting from zero—we're building on an existing foundation,” he said.
