China Trials Argentine Soybean Imports Amid U.S.-China Tensions

The shipment is expected to arrive in Guangdong in September, as China seeks to secure supplies of key animal feed ingredients during the ongoing U.S.-China trade war.

China has made a rare purchase of soymeal from Argentina in an effort to ensure a stable supply of a crucial animal feed component amid continuing trade tensions with the United States.

According to sources familiar with the matter, several Chinese traders and feed producers jointly placed the trial order with Argentina, the world’s largest exporter of soymeal and soybean oil. This is the first such purchase since China allowed soybean imports from Argentina in 2019, the sources said.

The 30,000-ton shipment is expected to depart from Argentina in July and arrive in China’s southern Guangdong province in September. The sources, who declined to be named due to the private nature of the deal, said the cargo was priced at around $360 per ton, including freight.

Although the volume is relatively small, the purchase is seen as a test for the fourth quarter of the year, a period typically dominated by newly harvested U.S. soybeans in global markets. China generally relies on imported soybeans, which are crushed domestically into animal feed and edible oil.

Gustavo Idígoras, head of Ciara-Cec—Argentina’s largest crop export and crushing group, which includes the country's major trading companies—said the group met with Liu Huanxin, head of China’s National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration, in Buenos Aires on Wednesday. The two sides discussed the commercial viability of Argentine soymeal exports.

In an effort to avoid U.S. crops amid the trade conflict with Washington, Beijing has sought out alternative suppliers. In May, China also set a new monthly record for soybean imports from Brazil.

Earlier this year, China imposed retaliatory tariffs on a range of U.S. agricultural products, including soybeans. Earlier this month, after negotiations, the U.S. announced that the two countries had reached a trade framework, which may signal a step toward resolving the tariff dispute and easing tensions. However, many details remain unclear.
