Following high-level discussions in Beijing, China and Colombia have officially signed a joint cooperation plan under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), marking a new chapter in bilateral economic and strategic collaboration.

In recent years, China's expanding economic engagement has significantly enhanced its influence across Latin America and the Caribbean—regions of considerable geopolitical relevance to the United States. The inclusion of Colombia, one of South America's key economies, represents a pivotal development in this broader regional dynamic.

Colombian Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia, speaking on May 14, characterized the country’s decision to join the BRI as “the boldest step Colombia has taken in decades.”

“The signing of this cooperation framework opens up vast opportunities in trade, investment, and tourism,” Sarabia stated on the social platform X. “Colombia’s path to openness is irreversible—we are firmly committed to greater global integration.”

China currently stands as Colombia’s second-largest trading partner, following the United States, and has recently overtaken the U.S. as the country’s primary source of imports.

According to reports from Xinhua News Agency, President Xi Jinping emphasized during his meeting with Colombian President Gustavo Petro that China is willing to increase imports of high-quality Colombian goods, actively support Chinese enterprises in investing and operating in Colombia, and contribute to the country's infrastructure development.

President Petro affirmed Colombia’s formal accession to the Belt and Road Initiative—originally launched by President Xi in 2013 with the aim of reviving the historic Silk Road through enhanced trade, investment, and infrastructure connectivity between China and the global community.

Colombia becomes one of over 150 participating countries, including more than 20 from Latin America. However, geopolitical complexities remain. In February 2024, Panama withdrew from the BRI, a move that Chinese officials attributed to external pressure from the United States.

Since assuming office in August 2022, President Petro has prioritized diversifying Colombia’s international partnerships. His state visit to China in October 2023 elevated bilateral ties to a strategic partnership, building upon diplomatic relations first established in 1980.
